Kurzbeschreibung:      AIM: The aim of this paper is to a) show the magnitude of avoidable visual impairment and what is being done to address the problem, and b) to discuss two public health activities conducted in the Pacific in partial fulfillment of a Practicum based at the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE). METHODS: Literature review: A literature review was conducted on global prevalence of eye disease and IAPB efforts to address the problem. Activity 1: Implementation of a school vision screening conducted by school teachers: A three-day-workshop was organized by the ICEE to train 23 school teachers in vision screening in Samoa, followed by mentoring the teachers in vision screening for one week. Activity 2: Up-skilling and mentoring of the spectacle technicians and the Vision Centre Manager (VCM) took place in the Eye Unit at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Results: Millions of people, mostly in the developing world are blind or visual impaired simply because they don’t have access to a basic eye examination or a pair of glasses. The Pacific is identified as one of the regions that are highly affected by avoidable visual impairment. In many Pacific countries the availability and provision of eye care is very limited, while refractive error is a significant cause of correctable visual impairment. Activity 1: In the screening in Samoa 621 children (332 male; 289 female) were screened of which 177 were referred (96 male; 81 female). Leading cause of the referrals was a fail at the trachoma station (78), followed by a reduced distance vision of 6/9 or worse in either one or both eyes (51). The teachers rated the training as very useful and 100% of them would recommend the course to other teachers. Activity 2: The Vision Centre (VC) in Honiara is adequately equipped and offers eye examinations, refractions and affordable, good-quality spectacles. In the first 1.5 month since the VC opened, 108 glasses were dispensed.Observed patients were happy with the time spent in the Vision Centre.
